A great day out at the races
TERANG and District Racing Club is gearing up for another great day of racing in the New Year but with a little tweak.
The popular race day will be run on Friday, January 2 rather than the traditional January 1 date.
Club manager Karen Van Kempen said the club had been approached by Racing Victoria to take on the Friday January 2 date as it would be the only race meeting in Victoria on the day and it would also see an increase of around $60,000 in prizemoney being paid back to owners as a result.
“It was a difficult decision for the committee, who know that the January 1 date is traditional, however with the Friday falling between New Year’s Day and the weekend, it is expected that the majority of businesses will be closed and it should be easy for people to attend the races,” Van Kempen said.
The club has been fortunate to receive valued funding from the state government under the Regional Racing Events Program and will use these funds to expand what they can offer on the day.
The day will still be the traditional Kids Day Out with free Kelly Sports Backpacks for the kids, free supervised Kelly Sports activities and arts and crafts stations, an animal nursery andjumping castle - plenty to keep the kids entertained on the beautiful expansive lawns at the Terang racecourse.
For those a bit older they will have a unique opportunity to experience Formula One Racing at its best on the bank of three racing simulators available on the day.
This is a great way for the teens and young at heart to grab bragging rights over their friends as they go head to head around the challenging tracks.
There will also be the usual horsepower, with seven great races on the day.
And for anyone who feels they could have ridden their losing horse better than the jockey, why not have a go on the mechanical horse and see what it’s like to be aboard and the skills required.
There will also be live music by John Brereton on the day (beside the Trackside Beer Garden) and free shuttle buses to make sure everyone can come out and support this great local event.
Gates open at 12noon with the first race scheduled for 1.30pm.
