A soaring success

THE skies above the Camperdown Racecourse were filled with model aircraft of various sizes last weekend for the Corangamite Model Aircrafts Club’s annual Fun Fly event.

The Fun Fly saw 35 pilots from model aircraft clubs across the state and even South Australia descend on the racecourse for a weekend of socialising and flying.

Corangamite Model Aircrafts Club president Foster Taylor said the club couldn’t have expected a better day in terms of attendance.

“We had people from Naracoorte, Mt Gambier, Ballarat, Bellarine Peninsula, Keilor – we had quite a large attendance from the Keilor club in Melbourne – and people from quite a few other clubs,” he said.

“We had another couple who attended from Ararat.

“We had our usual spread of pilots from right around the south west and across into South Australia.

“We had a bit of an issue on Sunday with the weather, but we had enough clear sky between showers for everyone to be able to fly.

“We had lunch at about 11.30am, and then people packed up and started heading back to wherever they came from so they could make it home in good time.”

Mr Foster said he was pleased to see strong spectator attendance from Camperdown in addition to the attendance from model aircraft enthusiasts.

“The good part about it is people, especially some of those who come from Melbourne, tend to fly larger and more powerful airplanes than we fly,” he said.

“It’s quite good for our members who don’t get down to Melbourne to see the larger models – it’s great when they come to our area and fly these large models.

“That’s the good part of the weekend – the sharing and passing on of information for people who may be higher on the ladder than we are.

“It’s quite a learning experience as well as an enjoyable one.

“All of our visitors said they had an enjoyable time and will come back next year, which was quite pleasing.”

Mr Foster extended his gratitude to attending club members who helped make the weekend successful.

“We were fortunate we had a good representation of our members who came to help over the weekend, which lessens the load on people,” he said.

“When you have a good attendance of members, you have plenty of people to do the few small jobs that need to be done over the weekend.”
