STUDENTS at St Thomas’ Primary School were named among the best schools in the state when NAPLAN results were handed down last week.

The results, as part of the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, provide comparable data about student performance in literacy and numeracy.
The school was recognised among 41 stand-out performing schools from metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
School principal Matthew Uzkuraitis said the result was a proud achievement for students, staff and the wider school community.
“We’ve been acknowledged to have had some really positive results which is a testament to the staff, the kids and the families here at the school,” he said.
“If you look over the years our data has been really strong, but it is nice to be acknowledged that we’ve had such positive results this year.
“Even though it is just one set of data, it gives us the opportunity to celebrate some achievements which are happening in the classroom.
“I hope the staff are really proud of what is happening, but also our students and their families who are so supportive.”
NAPLAN provides a nation-wide measure for student performance which can help assess if students are progressing through literacy and numeracy over time.
“It’s an Australian standardised test that happens earlier in the year, in March,” Mr Uzkuraitis said.
“The students in Years Three and Five do reading, writing, numeracy and language conventions as part of the assessment.
“We’ve had some really positive results over the years and this year was no different.
“We went quite well across most areas this year, which was great.”
Mr Uzkuraitis said another year of positive results was a point of pride, but felt the process of refining and shaping education to maximise student outcome was the most important aspect.
“The students were excited to find out how well they had done but we try not to overplay it too much,” he said.
“It is just one set of data so while we’re proud of their achievements, but data has been strong over a period of time so I think the process we’ve got in place seems to be working.
“Everyone in the school community has a role to play – success in education is collective.”
