Cobden Tech serve senior citizens
COBDEN Technical School food technology students last week engaged with the community by providing a lunch to the Cobden senior citizens club.

On Thursday, December 4, Cobden Technical School food technology students prepared and served lunch for senior citizens in Cobden.
Food technology teacher and junior sub-school leader Jen McLennan said the relationship was formed with the senior citizens thanks to Cobden Technical School principal Narelle Holiday.
“Once a month the senior citizens have a lunch that’s provided either by the school or by Country Women’s Association and the school is involved as part of a fundraiser for our student voice committee,” she said.
“We’ve been involved for the past couple of years making lunches and this year we were approached and asked to do the lunch for December.
“We do prepare and serve the lunch so my food technology classes make the meals and we make them a couple of days before the event and prepare the food as well.
“We have about four students come along each time plus our staff member Kerri Blain comes along as well.
“We go along, we set everything up, we serve all the food and we have some students working in the kitchen to actually dish up the food and then we’ve got students who serve the food to the tables as well.”
Mrs McLennan said the lunch provided a great opportunity for students to engage with the wider Cobden community.
“It gives our students a chance to talk and to communicate with some of the older people in our community which is really fantastic,” she said.
“At the end of each lunch I always do a little bit of a speech, a little bit of a what’s going on at Cobden Technical School so everyone’s aware of that.
“I believe that we’ve got quite a few members of the senior citizens who have past ties with the school so they’re always really interested in what’s going on.
“This time we had Narelle come along with us as well so she was able to speak about some of the fantastic things happening at the school currently.
“We really enjoy the opportunity that this affords us – there’s that financial benefit as well of supporting the student voice committee and we’re able to put those funds towards making some positive changes in the school and then furthering communication and connections in the community as well.”
