As Western District Newspapers reported last September, the Victorian Government has delivered $2.4 million in funding for the redevelopment under the Building Fund for Non-Government Schools (Catholic).

The funding will see the school’s classrooms rebuilt including enhancements to lighting, flooring, furniture and an emphasis on flexible learning spaces to ensure students thrive in educational spaces built for modern education.

The corridors connecting the classrooms will also receive a facelift.

St Thomas’ Primary School principal Matthew Uzkuraitis said he was excited for a historic development which would usher in a new era of education at the school.

“Last year we were successful in receiving a State Government grant for non-government schools to refurbish our six classrooms,” he said.

“Mathcon won the tender so they started over the holidays with a demolition of the junior wing first.

“Those three classrooms are being gutted and readied for a facelift.”

Mr Uzkuraitis said the school would improvise in utilising available space to ensure students remain comfortable and undistracted while the works progress.

“We’ve just had to get students from those classrooms situated in new areas throughout the school such as in portables, in our community room and in the library,” he said.

“Hopefully once this part is done then work will begin on the middle and senior wing – probably early next year.”

Mr Uzkuraitis said the upgrades would benefit generations of St Thomas’ Primary School students to come.

“It’s exciting,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic chapter in our school’s history to have such a facelift.

“Hopefully it will be great for our kids, first and foremost, but also our families and our teachers and staff.”

The Victorian School Building Authority estimates construction will finish in the third quarter of 2026.
