Cyclists sprint to the finish

RACE 10 of the Camperdown Cycling Club season saw a close sprint to the finish line in the senior race.

With Christmas fast approaching and most riders out sick, injured or away, there were only four starts in last Thursday’s race.

Matt Clark led off limit solo, with Finn Baxter chasing three minutes behind (also by himself).

New rider Daryl Suter debuted on scratch, with Oliver Clark five minutes behind limit.

The weather was sunny and a strong easterly wind made it a fast race going out and around the back of the racecourse.

Finn put in an effort at the start to gain time against Matt Clarke in the tailwind but quickly ran out of energy and was unable to close the gap for the rest of the race after turning into the wind at the Chocolyn bridge.

Daryl and Oliver worked together well and caught Finn between the flower farm and the racecourse.

Finn hung on the back of the two scratch riders for a short time before being dropped off the back between the abs and pasques’ corners.

Matt rode an impressive time trial staying away from the scratch group and maintaining a large distance at the line where he finished first in a time of 30.16.

Daryl and Oliver finished in a close sprint to the line, with Daryl narrowly coming second and fastest time, and Oliver finishing third, both in a time of 25.27.

Finn rolled in later to claim fourth place in a time of 30.14, winning the prestigious wooden spoon.

In the junior race on Thursday, 10 riders moved to the start line.

Pocket rocket Eleanor has had a roller coaster of emotions since she started cycling, trying to increase her time and place getting.

Race 10 was Eleanor’s moment of glory, crossing the line with a time of 19.41 to take first place.

In second was Lawson in a personal best of 11.27, with Henry third in 12.04 (another personal best).

Other riders were Bede 12.39 (PB), Finny 13.53, Bentley 11.15 and Taj 12.58.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen issues with the timing, Archie, Ava and Nathaniel were unable to record a time.

The club welcomes new riders, both junior and senior ranks, with all supported by experienced riders.
