Demons promote road safety
THE Timboon Demons Football Netball Club (TDFNC) has received funding to go towards promoting road safety messages as a part of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Club Rewards program.

More than 300 football and netball clubs shared a total of $700,000 in funding for leading the way in promoting road safety in their communities.
TDFNC secretary Andrew Pegg said the initiative for their club came about as a result of seeing TAC messages on social media and the AFL western districts club development lead sending around a monthly newsletter with funding opportunities.
“The road safety message is something I’m pretty passionate about given the impact that the road toll has on rural and regional environments and it’s been a particularly bad 12 months in our region,” he said.
“As a committee TDFNC opted to register for the TAC Club Rewards program.”
Mr Pegg said the club decided to begin running a number of initiatives to promote road safety.
“We began a courtesy bus after major functions to ensure everyone made it home safely,” he said.
“We had TAC branded road safety flyers and promotional material featuring our senior footballers and netballers that young people look up to as well as a slogan to try and draw attention to the message.
“We had these on every table at Thursday night meals, at several prominent places at the inside and outside bar, entrances to clubrooms, toilets and the canteen.
“Every Thursday night president Mick Hunt, when doing our junior and senior team announcements, would dedicate time to promoting a different TAC message and the risks, such as drink driving, distracted driving, using your phone while driving and speeding.”
Other initiatives included running a targeted campaign on social media and club communication apps and competing in a TAC road safety round, which Mr Pegg said was an amazing day and extremely well attended.
“It’s been a fantastic opportunity to be involved with such a great initiative that is actively promoting a much-needed road safety message to try and reduce the road toll,” he said.
“The full amount of the funds received are going directly back into renovations at the Bendigo Bank Timboon Recreation Reserve to improve the safety of our community and members.
“The funds will go towards installation of nets behind the goal posts to protect cars in the car park, those walking the main thoroughfare between football and netball as well as the main kids’ playground.
“We have several projects underway currently working with the Timboon Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Heytesbury/Princetown Storm Cricket Club and Timboon Tennis Association all of which will help us achieve our goal of being one of the premier sporting hubs in the south west.”
