Important win for Pelicans

BOOKAAR scored an important win in round 14 of the Colac-South West premier cricket competition over Woorndoo.

The match was played at the Port Campbell Recreation Reserve on the turf wicket, impressing Pelicans’ skipper Lachie Green.

“What a beautiful wicket, I think it's the best wicket that we’ve played on all year,” Green said.

“It sort of gave a bit for everyone, it seamed, it spun, but if you got in it turned into a really nice batting wicket as well.”

Bookaar won the toss and sent the Tigers in to bat, with Woorndoo all out in the 40th over for 144.

Woorndoo’s innings was dominated by 87 from 68 balls to Tyler Schafer.

“We dropped him probably three or four times, and it was one of those innings where he just hit it over the field or just short of the field.

“He’s a sweet timer of the ball, once he gets going, he’s hard to get out.”

Bookaar used just four bowlers to dismiss Woorndoo.

“I’d say we’ve probably got the best turf bowling line up in the competition.

“I reckon in the three turf games we’ve played, we’ve got 30 wickets, and I don’t think we’ve conceded any more than about 160 odd.”

New ball bowlers Fraser and Charlie Lucas led the way, with Charlie taking 4/33 from 9.1 overs and Fraser 3/22 from 10.

“We got them six or seven down, and Fraser and Charlie lined me up and said, ‘give us the ball, we wanna knock them over’, and I said ‘no drama’.

“That’s probably a luxury we’ve got with Michael Winzar and Paddy Hassett in the team, great finishing bowlers for the end of the innings, I knew I could bring our strike bowlers back on and still have good bowlers on hand for the end.”

Green also had praise for Louis Darcy and Tim Fitzgerald who bowled 10 over spells.

Darcy took 2/37, with Fitzgerald taking 1/46.

“Louis bowled another beautiful spell.

“Timmy’s figures weren’t as good as what he bowled; I think we dropped five catches off him and it was quite a frustrating day for him, with a few sixes going over the fence, but he bowled a beautiful spell.”

Green is thrilled with how the Bookaar attack has gone in the second half of the season.

“Since Christmas we changed a few things with our bowling plans, and we’ve taken wickets every week, I think we’ve bowled every side out.

“We had a good chat at Christmas saying that things probably weren’t working too well with the ball, but after that it’s been pretty good.”

In reply, Bookaar went out hard at the Woorndoo bowlers, passing the score in just 23.2 overs, though the Pelicans did lose seven wickets in the process.

“We were chasing a little bit of net run rate again, so probably being seven down wasn’t a real reflection of where we’re at.

“We can finish anywhere from first to fifth, net run rate is definitely going to play a part in it.”

In this week’s final round, Bookaar will host top of the ladder Stoneyford at Frederick St.

“They’ve obviously been the benchmark all year.

“We walk into it knowing we’re a good side, and on our day we can beat anyone.”

In division two, Bookaar had a 48 run loss to Pomborneit at Frederick St.

Pomborneit batted first and were dismissed from the second last ball of the innings.

Thomas Baker led the Bookaar bowlers with 4/35 from eight overs, with Stephen Fitzgerald and Myles Sinnott taking two wickets each.

Bookaar fell short in reply, all out for 180 in the 38th over.

Opener Luke O’Neil with 38 from 31 balls, hitting six boundaries, Nathan Moran scoring 22 and number 11 Myles Sinnott making 20 not out.

The loss sees Bookaar drop from first to second on the ladder, with the division two Pelicans having a bye in tomorrow’s final round.

In the senior women’s semi-final on Wednesday night, Bookaar earnt a spot in the grand final with a 32 run win over Ecklin at Frederick St.

Audrey Ringe and Jada Mahony both reached the 30 run retirement mark, with Tracey Baker scoring 29 and Erin Hassett 22 not out in Bookaar’s 5/133.

In reply, Ecklin made 5/101 from their 20 overs with Mahony, Taylor Cameron and Charlotte Hinds taking a wicket each.

In a game reduced to 25 overs a side, Bookaar batted first and made 6/127.

Arlo Herry and Xander Kent both made 30 retired.

In reply the Storm fell just short, making 7/119.
