Magpies hunting first win
CAMPERDOWN is still searching for its first win in the Hampden League senior football competition after a 76 point loss to Koroit last week.
The Saints burst out of the blocks with a seven goal to one first quarter on their way to a 21.7.133 to 8.9.57 win at the Leura Oval.
“It didn’t look like that on the scoreboard, but it certainly didn’t feel that way playing,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.
“We had 10 more inside 50s than they did, and we won the clearances for the day, but the breakdown for us was that they were highly accurate and their conversion was really quite high.”
It was up forward that the Magpies struggled.
“We really struggled once we did get it inside the arc to convert, so it was a frustrating day, we didn’t feel like the scoreboard reflected how competitive we were.”
Jonty Lafferty and Josh Place were best for the Magpies in the loss.
“They both are really competitive.
“JP has got a different role at the moment, we’ve moved him out of the back line, and he’s playing a little bit more up field in a forward pressure position, both of those boys were really good.”
Dom Absalom was also in the best, with Thomas also praising Bailey Thompson.
“Dom’s an exciting player, he works really hard to get the most out of himself, he’s really starting to learn to play to his strengths.
“Bailey wasn’t in the best, but for all intents and purposes, he was probably one of our better players.”
This week Camperdown host South Warrnambool at the Leura Oval.
“They’re going to be tough, we will continue to build and play on our systems.
“They’re a bit of a team where they’ve got a lot of VFL listed guys, so they’re going to be a big challenge, but our boys, they’re growing, they’re continuing to develop, so we’ll certainly be keen to see how we match up against them coming into this week.”
In the reserves, Koroit scored an 11.13.79 to 1.8.14 win.
Best for Camperdown were Luke Bone, Hugh Gordon and Jack Hookway, with Jacob Fowler kicking the only goal.
Koroit won the under 18 game by 84 points, 13.15.93 to 1.3.9.
Levi Duynhoven, Dustin Lane and Charlie Londregan were best for Camperdown, with Angus Borgia kicking the only goal.
In the under 16s, Camperdown had an 8.11.59 to 3.5.23 win.
George Sadler, Miller Lockhart, Archie McDonald and Alex Huggins were best for the under 16 Magpies, with McDonald and Blake O’Connor kicking two goals each.
Koroit had a five point win in the under 14s, 4.7.31 to 4.2.26.
Best for Camperdown were Darby Sinnott, Harry Sinnott and Bailey Carman, with Darby Sinnott kicking two goals.
The under 12 football was also tight, with Koroit winning 7.4.46 to 6.7.43.
Roy Molan, Freddie Lillie, Spencer Doolan and Hamish Christensen were Camperdown’s best, with Molan and George Titmus kicking two goals each.
In the Open netball, Koroit led all day to claim a 74-58 win.
Best for Camperdown were Rosie Pickles, Sophie Conheady and Piper Stephens, with Nell Mitchell shooting 34 goals and Conheady 14.
Koroit was too strong in division one, running away with a 56-26 win.
Isobel Sinnott, Macy Mahony and Chloe O’Brien were best for Camperdown in the loss, with Kiara Love scoring 20 goals.
Division two was close, Koroit winning by just one goal, 36-35.
Camperdown’s best were Kirby Stonehouse, Grace Dawson and Hope Kerr, with Dawson scoring 20 goals and Hannah Plozza 15.
Koroit got the points in the division three netball with a 40-31 win.
Lauren Murphy, Emily Helmore and Lily Baker were best for the Magpies, with Lauren Groen shooting 19 goals.
The 17 and under game saw Koroit win 58-28.
Charlotte Hinds, Kiara Love and Maisie Molan were best, with Love shooting 21 goals.
Koroit was also too strong in the 17 and under reserves, winning 45-19.
Best for the Magpies were Keira Johnston, Mia Oates and Grace Fleming, with Matea McKenzie shooting 13 goals.
The 15 and under netball went Koroit’s way, 47-19.
Abigail Sinnott, Olive Wills and Taylor Cameron were best for Camperdown, with Sinnott scoring 15 goals.
Koroit took out the 15 and under reserves with a 31-16 win.
Camperdown’s best were Reagan Webb, Ruby Johnston and Scarlett Simmonds, with nine goals to Ruby Johnston.
The 13 and under netball saw Koroit register a 31-15 win.
Best for Camperdown were Bella Brebner, Luella Rylance and Zoe Unwin, with Marlee Fitzgerald scoring 10 goals.
Koroit won the 13 and under netball 19-11.
Pippa Woodmason, Maddison Lyne and Poppy Gaut were best for the Magpies, with Olivia Simmonds scoring five goals.
