New butcher opens doors

THE community has thrown its support behind a young family who opened the doors to Terang’s new butchery.

Leehane’s Country Meats owner Zac Leehane, along with partner Cassie, began trading last Wednesday.

The family has taken over operations at 76 High Street, which was previously Robbos Country Cuts.

Mr Leehane said he had spent the past four years working in Port Fairy but decided the time was right to make the switch over to Terang, closer to where he was born and raised.

“I’ve been doing this for a little bit and thought it would be interesting to try my own thing,” he said.

“I thought I’d see how it went – but that’s all it really was.

“I saw the business was up for sale, and I didn’t mind the idea of being a business owner.

“I grew up in Camperdown so I thought I’d give it a crack.”

Mr Leehane said the community had shown its support since the business opened.

“It’s been good,” he said.

“Getting everything sorted was interesting.

“It was a bit stressful, but we got there.

“Everyone came out and supported us, which was good to see.”

Customers will see some familiar faces with the retention of staff who previously worked for Robbos Country Cuts, which Mr Leehane said provided him a better chance to hit the ground running.

“It’s good to have the help,” he said.

“They know what the locals want and being from here helps out because they know everyone.

“It hasn’t forced me to rush in trying to learn everyone’s name, so it’s good.”

Mr Leehane said his vision for the store would be sticking the basics of offering high-quality products at good prices.

“I plan to keep it pretty similar while introducing a few new steaks, trying to introduce a few new things here and there,” he said.

“We’ll see how things go and we can always change things around, but we’ll keep most of the stuff pretty similar.

“It’s a butcher shop at the end of the day – it’s just meat.”
