New challenges await Bulls
POMBORNEIT’S division one cricketers start the season with a stern test, facing reigning Colac District Cricket Association division one premiers Colac at the Pomborneit Recreation Reserve tomorrow.
The opening round clash in the Colac-South West premier division one competition will be the first match between the two clubs at senior men’s level since March 19, 1932 in the old Corangamite Cricket Association.
The Bulls tried unsuccessfully to move to the Colac District Cricket Association in the winter of 2024, but now get their chance to pit themselves against the best of both the Colac and South West competitions in the 2025/26 season.
“There’s a real excitement around the playing group,” Pomborneit division one captain Grant Place said.
“We were keen to go last season, but this format is probably the best option and something we are all looking forward to.”
The Bulls will have a few changes to the team that lost the grand final to Cobden in March.
Opening bowler Brad Hillman has retired, while former skipper Matt Bignell will miss round one with a suspension received from the 2024/25 decider.
Fast bowlers Roshene Fernando and Mikey Hayes will make their Pomborneit debuts, with young leg-spinner Josh Reynolds also a chance to play in Bignell’s absence.
The Bulls have had a strong pre-season, with sessions held at Pomborneit and at the QX3 indoor nets in Warrnambool.
“We’ve had some really good sessions and everyone is keen,” Place said.
“We’re expecting a really strong competition and think we’ll compete well.”
