Prepare for summer through home upgrade tips

AFTER the hugely popular winter warmth workshops, Corangamite Shire Council is inviting residents to learn how they can keep their houses cool in summer.

Free information sessions will be held next month to allow residents to learn how a range of easy and affordable upgrades can help them stay comfortable.

Climate change and emissions reduction officer Prue Liddy said Going Green Solutions would run three in-person sessions and two online during November.

“Making serious improvements doesn’t have to be a big deal,” she said.

“In the secondary glazing workshops, you will learn how to use a couple of low cost, do-it-yourself secondary glazing solcorangamite.vic.gov.au/EnergyEfficiencyutions, that are suitable for many kinds of windows.

“Secondary glazing is a way to reduce the amount of heat moving in (summer) and out (winter) of windows without replacing them.

“We will show you the materials, practice hands-on how to use them, and talk through which options might work best for different window types.

“These low-cost options are ideal for both homeowners and renters.”

The workshop will build on the winter workshops, showing how secondary glazing can also work to keep homes cool in the summer.

Lismore will host an in-person workshop on Saturday, November 29 from 10am at the Lismore Community Centre Hall in Seymour Street.

Sessions will also be held in Terang and Port Campbell.

Experienced home energy efficiency assessor Lucinda Flynn will present the workshops.

Ms Flynn has helped more than 1000 households learn how to make their homes more comfortable and use less energy.

She shares her knowledge in workshops and training sessions, which she enjoys running for people of all ages and backgrounds.

“There’s no single right way to improve a home,” Ms Flynn said.

“Instead, it’s about finding what works best for each household, based on your goals, preferences and budget.”

Her advice can include easy, low-cost DIY tips, bigger upgrades done by professionals, and everything in between

“This way, everyone can choose what suits them best,” Ms Flynn said.

“I aim to help people understand the basics of how their homes work – how heat is being gained in summer, and how appliances are using energy.

“People will leave a workshop feeling like they know where to start and what to do first, and not feel overwhelmed.”

Two online workshops will also be held – one on liveable homes on Thursday, November 27 from 5.30pm and one on draught sealing on Tuesday, December 2 from 5.30pm.

To register, go to corangamite.vic.gov.au/EnergyEfficiency or call council on 5593 7100.
