Rain results remain low
LATE bouts of rainfall were not enough to see what is historically the year’s wettest month deliver much-needed rain over the region.

August proved to be another dry month over Terang and Mortlake as each community experienced rain well below the long-term average.
In Terang the rain gauge reached just 59.8mm, far below the 91.2mm long-term average over the same period.
The highest daily rainfall was recorded on August 30 when 15.2mm was recorded.
While the figure was down on the long-term average, it was a sharp increase on the year prior after just 32.4mm of rain fall in August 2024.
The winter period has proven a boost for the region with 265.2mm hitting the ground over Terang, a result consistent with the 252.7mm long-term average over the same period.
The result brings the total annual rainfall to 351mm for Terang, well below the 513.9mm long-term average over the same period.
Meanwhile in Mortlake, the result was far drier after rainfall later in the month did not reach the town.
Throughout August just 28.9mm of rainfall was recorded over Mortlake, far below the 63.1mm long-term average for the month.
The highest daily rainfall occurred on August 16 when 6.8mm hit the ground.
The result closely resembled the disappointing conclusion to winter experienced last year, when just 30.8mm hit the ground throughout the month.
The result for winter proved a positive for the region, surpassing the long-term average for the year’s wettest season.
A total of 224.2mm of rain fell over Mortlake during winter, above the long-term average over the same period of 181.8mm.
Despite the result, the rainfall result for 2025, to-date, remains well below the long-term average.
Just 300.6mm of rain has fallen over Mortlake through the first eight months of the year, below the long-term average of 378.2mm over the same period.
