Revamped facilities and new life member

NOT even the circling bad weather could deter more than 50 eager tennis players from hitting the courts in Camperdown last Friday night.

The Hampden Tennis Association celebrated the recent, long-awaited and much anticipated upgrades to its clubrooms with a knock-out competition.

For the first time in more than a decade, the association ran a club championship event and according to secretary Donna Watts, the evening was a huge success.

“We had more than 50 entries which was amazing,” she said.

“The night was a very late one and certainly took full advantage of our new LED lights – the courts were well lit.

“It was also nice to enjoy our revamped clubrooms, which includes upgrades to the kitchen and toilets, new furniture and a fresh coat of paint.”

At the end of the night’s competition, Brad Gillingham and Richard White were crowned the men’s doubles champions while for the women, Linda Bowman and Fiona Gutheridge were announced winners.

The mixed doubles champions were Megan Finlayson and Kelvin Robertson.

“Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of a life membership to Ian Gordon,” Donna said.

“Ian has been a valued member of our tennis association for more than 30 years.

“He has carried out various roles, has held the position of president, administrator, player and is always willing to help out wherever and whenever needed – certainly a very worthy recipient of a life membership.”
