Simpson women shine

SIMPSON scored a 99 run win in round seven of the Colac District Cricket Association women’s competition on Sunday.

Batting first against West Warrion in the match at the Simpson Recreation Reserve, the Tigers made 5/147 from their 25 overs.

“We planned to bat first and fiddle around with the order a bit,” Simpson all-rounder Shae De Francesco said.

“It was really good to give some of our younger players a really good go.”

De Francesco top scored with 35 retired from 32 balls, hitting a six to get over the 30 run retirement mark.

Teenager Esha Crole also hit the retirement mark, making 30 from 42 balls.

“We were really stoked to see Esha reach 30, she’s very nonchalant at the crease and just goes about batting.”

Another Simpson teenager in Milly Saunders was elevated to open in the absence of captain Chelsea Osburn, making 17 from 45 balls.

“Milly normally bats at number five and we put her up to open, she worked really hard and did a fantastic job.

“This game was a really great opportunity to get some young players up the order and give them a really good go.”

In reply, West Warrion was bowled out for 48 in the 19th over.

De Francesco took 5/1 from four overs, with Kelsey Fratantaro taking 3/1 from three overs.

“Our strength is in our bowling, we bowled full and got rewarded.

“We used eight bowlers, it was good a couple of the girls got a bit more of a bowl.”

De Francesco was happy with Simpson taking all nine wickets.

“It was only the second time this season (as well as round two against Colac) that we’ve bowled a team out.

“We really enjoyed playing West Warrion, it was a very social day.”

This Sunday, in their final game before the Christmas break, the Simpson women play Apollo Bay at Simpson.

“They’re another team that are thereabouts, it will be an important game for both sides, on paper it shapes up as a really good match.”
