The home team won the toss and batted first in the round eight match in the Colac-South West premier competition at Cobden.

Jeremy Lucas got the early wickets of Campbell Walsh and Matthew Kemp, both caught behind, before Fraser Lucas got the wicket of Cobden captain Johno Benallack for one to have the home team in trouble at 3/8.

“Jeremy was exceptional, we had a couple out, it’s a testament to our depth that we can bring a player like that up from the twos and for him to contribute so well,” Bookaar captain Lachie Green said.

“The likes of Jeremy and Henry Green are happy to play with their mates in division two but they’d be first grade selections in most sides.”

Matt and Lachy Boyle put on 78 for the fourth wicket then wickets fell regularly in the game, reduced to 40 overs a side.

Tim Fitzgerald claimed both Boyle brothers and again proved economical, taking 2/22 from eight overs.

Old ball specialist Michael Winzar took 4/18 in his four over spell as Cobden was dismissed in the 37th over for 160.

“Our bowling was fantastic, really pleased to keep them to 160.

“Their turf was as good as I’ve seen it, a really good wicket, credit to them, their ground is looking amazing at the moment.”

After the early loss of Simon Baker, a second wicket partnership of 74 between Eddie and Fraser Lucas put the Pelicans in control.

“That partnership was the game changer, it was the best I've seen Fraser bat in a long time.

“We had a plan to get through the new ball, those boys did that beautifully while still scoring at a good rate.”

Eddie was out in the 18th over for 44 from 56 balls, hitting four fours and a six, with Fraser dismissed in the 22nd over for 39 from 52 balls, hitting six boundaries.

“They both got out to pretty innocuous dismissals, both caught and bowled, we could have done without that.”

The game tightened up as Bookaar struggled to put partnerships together.

When Green was dismissed for 21, the Pelicans were 7/150, before Tim Fitzgerald finished the game off in the 39th over, hitting a six and a four to get Bookaar over the line for a three wicket win.

“We didn’t want it to go to the last over where anything could have happened, Tim’s experience in that situation was invaluable.

“Cobden fought it out well, it was a very good game.”

This week third- placed Bookaar host top of the ladder Colac at Frederick St.

“It’s another game we are looking forward to, their bowling in particular looks strong so it will be a good test.”
