Uniting Church open on Christmas

THE Uniting Church Hall in Camperdown will be opening its doors to those seeking some company on Christmas Day for the return of the Christmas Open Door event.

The event, which will run from 10am-3pm at 41-43 Barkly Street, will see residents invited to join together and celebrate Christmas.

Organiser Andrea Bell said her partner Tim O’Sullivan and herself saw a need last year to provide a space for people to come together at Christmas.

“There are a lot of people who are alone on Christmas Day – whether it’s because they’ve already done their Christmas parties, their families live interstate, they have sickness or are battling health conditions making them unable to travel, or even overseas workers,” she said.

“We thought about getting together and seeing how many people turned up.

“This is our second year running this event.

“A lot of this is about coming together and social engagement.

“It’s been a pretty tough year in this area due to having drought and certainly financial challenges in the region as well.”

The return follows a strong crowd at last year’s event – with 85 enjoying lunch together while an additional 56 people visited for morning tea.

The free, family-friendly event will follow the same format as last year, including morning tea, a barbecue and sweets.

“The day will open at 10am for morning tea – this is for people who perhaps might be going to family lunches somewhere and are popping in to say hello,” Ms Bell said.

“We will be having cold lunch and a barbecue.

“There will also be a visit form Santa and some live music.

“We have a band of volunteers who have put their hands up to help out on the day, which is fantastic.

“It’s quite simple – to ensure no-one is alone at Christmas.”

Bookings are preferred for catering purposes, but not essential, and can be made by contacting Ms Bell on 0419 931 709.
