Women strong at the crease
THE Pomborneit gold women put in one of their most dominant performances in the round eight Colac District Cricket Association match at Irrewillipe on Sunday.
Tomahawk Creek won the toss and elected to bat, and lasted just 10.5 overs, all out for 14.
Captain Samantha Coxon took 4/8 from five overs, Tayla Reynolds took 2/6 from four with Jessica Moulden taking 3/0 from 1.5 overs.
“We had a day out and it all happened quickly,”Coxon said.
“For the most part we put the ball on the stumps and we got seven of our wickets bowled.”
The Gold women shuffled the batting order around for the run chase, with juniors Lucia Clarke and Isabella Wain opening, with Clarke making 15 from 28 balls.
Neave Thompson was promoted to number four and made 26 from 35 balls.
Nellie Sadler hit 20 from 17, with Jess Moulden smashing 31 retired from 14 balls with five fours and a six.
Tayla Reynolds finished the innings off well with 30 retired from 29 balls, hitting six boundaries.
“We passed them in the fourth over so it was all about giving everyone a hit.
“Most players made the most of their opportunity which will hopefully hold us in good stead for the matches after the break.”
Pomborneit Gold finished at 6/174 to record a comprehensive win.
At Birregurra, the home team had a strong win over Pomborneit Maroon.
The visitors batted first, making 5/83 from their 25 overs.
Co-captain Debra Reynolds made a patient 12 from 50 balls in her 50th game for the club.
Under 17 player Lilli Saarikallio made an unbeaten 15 from 50 balls, with Kelly Reynolds making seven and Meg Nolan five not out.
“After last week’s effort (being bowled out for 29) we were very happy to bat out our overs and put a total on the board,” 50 gamer Reynolds said.
“Lilli Saarikallio was fantastic and I was really pleased with how Kelly and Meg applied themselves at the crease.”
Saarikallio took a wicket in the first over but after that Birregurra asserted their dominance, passing Maroon’s score in the 12th over.
The home team finished on 5/168.
Marissa Whitehead led the Maroon bowlers with 2/25, with Meg Nolan taking her first wicket at senior level.
“Marissa is developing really well as a young leg-spinner in her first year out of under 13 girls cricket,” Reynolds said.
“We bowled ok, our fielding was better with some good catches and a run out.”
Going into the Christmas break, Pomborneit Gold sits on top of the ladder while Maroon is eighth in the 10 team competition.
Both teams will resume on February 1.
Pomborneit’s under 17 girls scored their second win of the season last Friday night, defeating Irrewarra Black at the Pomborneit Recreation Reserve.
The visitors batted first, making 7/55 from their 20 overs.
New ball bowler Lilli Saarikallio continued her good form, taking 2/10 from four overs, with spinner Marissa Whitehead taking 2/8 from four.
After a slow start and some early wickets, slumping to 5/38, a hard hitting 33 from 36 balls to Isla Spokes led to Pomborneit passing the score in the 12th over.
Spokes hit the only two boundaries of the innings, with under 13 players Scarlett Whitehead, Pippa Murphy and Emily Reynolds making nine, 13 and six not out respectively as Pomborneit finished on 111.
The win puts the under 17 girls into fourth position going into the break, with the competition resuming on February 6.
In the under 17 boys, Pomborneit had the bye on Tuesday night, and go into the break in third position, with their next match on January 20.
In the under 16 boys, the round seven match rescheduled for Tuesday night didn’t go ahead, with Bookaar forfeiting the fixture.
The under 16 competition will recommence on January 25.
Friday night’s under 14 boys match saw Pomborneit well beaten by Irrewarra Red at Colac Secondary College Oval.
Batting first, the junior Bulls made 5/98 from their 30 overs.
Opener Bailey Fox made 27 retired from 24 balls, hitting five fours to top score.
Others to reach the 24 ball retirement mark were Crawford Dunn with 13, Basil Hunt with seven and Lucas Place with two.
Irrewarra made an imposing 3/248 in reply.
Crawford Dunn, Gus Murphy and Tommy Fox took a wicket each for Pomborneit.
The under 14 Bulls go into Christmas in seventh place in the 12 team competition and play their next game on January 30.
In the under 13 boys match on Monday night, Pomborneit had a 20 run win over Cobden.
The visitors batted first at Pomborneit, making 8/83 from their 24 overs.
Jamie Gardiner took 3/15 from three overs with the new ball, with Billy Hillman taking two wickets and Hamish Christensen and Jack Hillman one each.
In reply, the junior Bulls made 7/103, passing Cobden’s score in the 19th over.
Bailey Fox made 23 retired from 15 balls, Jack Hillman made 16 retired from 20, Lucas Place made 12 retired from 25 and Jamie Gardiner made it a strong all round game with 11.
The under 13 Bulls go into the break third on the ladder and play their next game on January 19.
At Colac’s Western Reserve on Sunday, Pomborneit’s under 13 girls had a 50 run win over Colac.
The home team batted first, making 97 from their 20 overs.
Scarlett Whitehead with 2/3 from two overs and Emily Reynolds with 2/9 from four overs led the Pomborneit bowlers, with Pippa Murphy also taking a wicket.
Pomborneit replied with 147 from its 20 overs.
Skarlette Wakeling top scored with 17, Zoe Unwin was elevated to open and scored 14, Millie Bourke made 12 with Pippa Murphy making 11 and Emily Reynolds 10.
Pomborneit go into the Christmas break on top of the under 13 girls ladder and play their next game on February 1.
